Neighborhood News |
Stay alert, residents! Our friendly Reynier Village was the site of a terrible crime this past Tuesday, July 29th. Around 3:20 AM, police officers responded to a burglary radio call in the 2600 block of Halm Ave, near Shenandoah Elementary School. Residents tell me an elderly individual was home. LAPD detained possible suspects in a vehicle near the house, but are subsequently not certain they were involved. LAPD saw smoke coming from the house and requested LAFD. Fireman entered the house and found a man armed with a large knife. It appears this intruder set the fire. LAFD exited and LAPD set up containment on the house. A bean-bag projectile was fired at the suspect who retreated deeper into the house and barricaded himself in. Ultimately, LAPD SWAT responded. Around 7:05AM, the suspect exited the house armed with that knife. The suspect was struck by police gunfire and died at scene. No one else was injured. The elderly resident is now safe. Whew. I will add that this is a good reminder to access your home’s vulnerability. We personally have an alarm service, four hard-wired exterior cameras plus a RING doorbell camera, a fence with a driveway gate, and we keep outside lights on all night. Police always tell me lights are a fabulous deterrent. My next door neighbor got hit two years ago by a crew of burglars who came over his back fence, and when they jimmied open his rear door, an alarm went off, and they immediately fled. Video cameras captured this, but the intruders used hoodies and COVID masks. Please invest in your safety! Pete the “Park Commish |

🌳 Park Update🌲
Happy to report we expect to see major improvements this late summer and fall. I am told by Terrence Gomes in Councilmember Heather Hutt’s office that the new design looks great. There was a delay due to the Department of Recreation and Parks (RAP) needing to test the playground equipment to see if the swing set and slide structure needed to be replaced – and it has been determined they are okay. There was also a cost overrun of $105,000 dollars. An amendment has been submitted to LA City to increase the project total to $805,000 dollars for improvements, and Heather Hutt is confident this motion will pass, as the money is already there. Get ready for new lights, surveillance cameras, hydration, benches, and a new fitness area by the restrooms. The new pergolas will now be called “shade structures.” There will be wheelchair access. And a new pour and fill playground surface to keep our kids safe.
Last month, we asked what is going on with the boarded-up Palms Westminster Presbyterian Church. Well, great news! We received a lovely letter from Mary Park, a Church Elder, and are happy to report that we have now established a dialogue between our association and the church. Members of the RVNA Board will be meeting with Church members to assist in any way we can.
Disturbing Trend: This past week, catalytic converters were stolen from two cars parked by residents along Reynier Ave! I know there have been several thefts on Hargis too. What is going on? On the plus side, new street lights were installed along Shenandoah behind the park.
Exciting News: The new Helms Bakery is almost open! With construction completed across from Father’s Office, Chef Sang Yoon has led the redesign. Get ready for a revitalized, modern interpretation of the original bakery. This includes a multi-space layout with a full-service restaurant for breakfast and lunch, a dedicated bakery with a takeaway counter for prepared foods, and a retail section for specialty products. This is going to be awesome!

Hello neighbors. We hope everyone is well and healthy, and taking care of yourselves and your loved ones. These are challenging times for many of us, and it can be tough to stay optimistic and hopeful. So, please remember to prioritize self-care activities that help you relax and recharge (e.g., exercise, mindfulness, meditation, loved ones, etc.), and to lean on your support system. If you need to talk to someone, reach out to family members, friends, spiritual leaders, your mental health professional, your employer’s assistance program, etc. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Stay safe, stay strong, take care.
RVNA Board continues to work with City and Council offices on issues such as illegal parking, RV encampment, etc. Even if those “wheels turn slowly,” please know that we are doing what we can to keep our neighborhood safe.
We have some ideas for social events that we hope to implement soon. As you know, however, these events require funds. That is how your annual membership can help. If you haven’t already done so, please consider paying the annual membership – $20/year. Please see payment options at the following link.
And please remember to report any graffiti and suspicious or illegal activities in our neighborhood through the MyLA311 app or website. The more we report suspicious activities, the greater the chances of increased police presence in our neighborhood.

🌳 Park Update🌲 |
This is Pete, the Park Commish: Happy to report that our park is looking green and beautiful. Recently, Javier and his apprentice at the California Conservation Corps took care of the graffiti on the house on Shenandoah facing Reynier Park. They are hired by the city to do this. Javier said his job was quiet for a long time but has recently gotten very busy due to an uptick in graffiti. Javier says the garage was tagged by a gang, but the fence was different – the work of a tagger who posts his graffiti on social media. Javier is now in charge of cleaning up graffiti in the area. His boss is away on maternity leave. He also is in charge of pulling weeds, plus picking up discarded trash & furniture, etc. They did a great job, and the two men did it with a smile. They power washed the plastic fence and actually painted the garage door, which is good to know if they tag your house. Happy to report the city installed bright new streetlights along Shenandoah between Gibson and Olin Streets. Thank you! Regarding the park improvements, Terrence Gomes reports they are still waiting for final estimates on the new pergolas, so stay tuned. Big Question: What is happening with the boarded-up PALMS WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH at 2908 Robertson Place on the corner of Cattaraugus and Robertson? Over three years ago, on Aug 3rd, 2020, a fire broke out. Firefighters extinguished the flames in about 25 minutes with minimal fire extension/smoke damage. No injuries were reported. And the burned-out church, Sunday school, and community room has remained boarded up ever since. How can we help this church? This was once a great asset to our neighborhood. Does anybody know what is happening? What can we do to get this church facility renewed, so it is once again a thriving asset to our Reynier Village community? On a fact-finding mission, I have left numerous phone and written messages for the church but have gotten NO RESPONSE. I hear nobody can get them to return inquiries. I am told that the church pastors are elderly, and we suspect they don’t have enough money to rebuild and bring the building up to code. Neighbors think the current congregation is looking for another church to partner with them to share costs as the membership has dwindled. How can we help? Since nobody at the church is responding to inquiries, I was told to call LA City Building and Safety. They kindly referred me to code engineer Will Michalak, who told me there are multiple reports of trespassing inside the boarded-up property. The code engineer said he would personally visit the property to inspect it again, and possibly refer the property to LA City Vacant Buildings Dept for further action. He said he wanted to tread lightly, respectfully, because this was a church and we all want to help them get back up and serving our neighborhood. Pete the “Park Commish” |

Park Update |
Reynier Park is a crown jewel for our cozy neighborhood. A happy place for us all to share. This is Board Member at Large, Peter Iliff, who some call “Park Commish,” because I’m the tall guy in the park twice a day picking up trash, throwing the ball for Moxie, and interfacing with concerned neighbors, LA City, City Council, SORO, and whoever can help us get stuff done. This week, Leo Floyd, Senior Park Maintenance Supervisor for the West Region, took time to personally call and say that he is here for whatever we need. Leo reports that LA City has deposited money into a Parks & Rec account for upcoming major park improvements. And a job order have been written for tree trimming. Bravo, Leo. More on this, but first– Today I spoke to Anthony, an LA City maintenance employee, as he was busy cleaning up our park. Anthony was picking up trash, blowing leaves, and cleaning bathrooms. First thing he said was “I love my job.” I asked what the biggest issue was, and sadly, he said nearly every morning he finds human feces smeared on the bathroom walls. Leo Floyd had said this was a mental health issue with many parks. But Anthony used a hose and cleaned it for us with a big smile. I must congratulate LA City for doing a great job mowing the lawn, fixing sprinklers, painting over graffiti, and removing trash every day. The park has never looked better. I have been successfully working with Hamilton High Asst Principal who has been a tremendous help to limit students from loitering in the park during school hours. Perhaps you’ve seen them at the picnic tables and “hot-boxing” in the bathrooms on late mornings. Thanks to Hamilton High Asst Principal we are seeing far less gang graffiti and illegal behavior. Now for BIG NEWS! The architect hired by LA City to design park improvements has delivered a blueprint to the planners, who did measurements and will come back with cost estimates in three weeks. At that time, City Council will review and share with the community. After getting feedback, the architect will proceed to finalized plans. The improvements include 1) New custom built pergolas. 2) New security cameras and lights. 3) New playground benches (traditional “New York Style” with back supports.) 4) New “Pour and Fill” which is the playground’s rubber padding. 5) New ADA disability compliant tables with wheelchair access under the pergola along Reynier Ave. Furthermore, the swings and jungle gym will undergo a safety review. We could see installation possibly as soon as this late summer, given no major hiccups in the design review process. Also, the pergolas will be custom built by an out of state manufacturer, which could take some time. Regarding the park trees, The LA City Arborist / “Tree Surgeon,” David Miranda, is scheduled to visit the park to perform a “bio-review” of the trees and plants in the park and make recommendations for replacement if necessary. And lastly, there is a strong push by SORO and City Council to establish a “Dog Park” on Cal Trans property near the end of Reynier Ave where it meets Cattaraugus. There is a path past an existing apartment building that leads to an open space where the park would be built. Pete the “Park Commish” |

Emergency Preparedness Tip |
After a major earthquake, one of the most important things to have on hand is water, as water lines may be damaged or contaminated. We can live without food for quite a long time, but only about 3 days without water. Storing about a gallon of water per person per day is advised. You can also store some water containers in your car in case the event occurs when you are away from home. If necessary, you can also use the water stored in your water heater (unless it’s tankless). It’s good to periodically open the spout at the bottom of your water heater and let some of the water run into a bucket to remove any sediment build-up. There are various sized water containers available for longer storage. The larger containers (up to 55-gallons) can be purchased with pumps and water preserver that lasts up to 5 years. You can find these on-line and they are also available locally at SOS Survival Products (sosproducts.com). |
